Sacred Shell or Frangula purshiana is a large shrub of the family Rhamnaceae, the part used is the bark of the trunk. The bark is cut into small pieces that are left to dry for at least a year. Anthraquinone glycosides are the main components of the plant, responsible for the cholagogue and laxative effect. Sacred shell, senna, rhubarb, .. all belong to the irritant laxatives or cathartics, cause stimulation of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system in the intestine and a direct action on the walls of the colon nerve with a consequent increase in intestinal motility and intestinal mucosal irritation. Sacred shell is a stimulant laxative, laxative effect manifests at 8-12 hours after administration. The action takes place in the colon. Increases intestinal motility by direct action on the nerve endings by irritation of the mucosa. It also increases the secretion of chloride, decreasing the absorption of fluids and electrolytes. Is caused by an increase in both water and electrolytes in the colonic lumen, which results in an increased pressure in the intestine and thus in a laxative action.
Recommended dosage: 1 capsule per day. Employment: Take 1 capsule with a glass of water before sleep.
Caution: We recommend taking cascara at bedtime. We do not recommend the use of cascara for an extended period of more than 1 week because it may cause dependence and habituation and promote constipation, and that by producing a loss of potassium can cause intestinal sluggishness. Not recommended for intestinal obstruction, paralytic ileus and gastrointestinal stenosis or spastic, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome. Not recommended in pregnancy, lactation, children under 2 years old. Interaction with digitalis, diuretics, corticosteroids, antiarrhythmics, estrogen, and indomethacin. In chronic treatments or high doses may produce adverse reactions (digestive problems and electrolyte: hypokalemia, ..). Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet, variety and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed recommended daily dose. Keep out of reach of children.
