Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum Gaertn.) Is a herbaceous species belonging to the Asteraceae family and is native to Europe. The part used is the fruit. Its components are flavanolignanes (silymarin, composed silibinas, isosilibinas, silychristin, silidianin), flavonoids and steroids. Its active ingredient is silymarin, this compound is mainly present in the seeds and acts as an antioxidant in the liver cells. Silymarin acts as a liver protector and regenerator. Silymarin exerts anti-inflammatory effect, inhibitory effect on leukotriene synthesis by inhibition of the 5 - lipoxygenase.
